One of my very favorite fashion companies, Hayden-Harnett, has been tapped by Walt Disney Signature to create a new collection, inspired by the upcoming 3D movie, Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides. The collection features richly printed silk and chiffon scarves, detailed leather cuffs and fine leather handbags that are priced from $78 to $498. They’ve also done a line of handbags for Target, as guest collaborators.
I got the chance to talk to Toni Hacker, one of the partners in this Brooklyn-based company. Here’s what she had to say:
First off, how in the world did you score such a huge job with Walt Disney Signature?
Actually, they approached us. It was a huge surprise. At first, we thought it was for something cutesy and whimsical, but soon found out that the line was meant for adults–chic, stylish, and amazing quality. And when you think about it, our brand are really aligned. We both have strong collectors heart.
How long did the project take–from concept to fruition?
We started with research and development back in September. Believe it or not, Walt Disney Signature didn’t give us a lot of direction or parameters. They choose companies that they can trust. And, we’d already worked on projects for Fantasia and Tron.
How will you maintain your “indie” status, while partnering with huge brands, like Walt Disney Signature and Target?
We are not just a fashion brand. We make art. My background is in art and industrial design and (because of that) I bring a different perspective. I don’t think these collaborations take anything away from our indie credibility. We are grateful to have such a loyal fanbase.
What’s next for Hayden-Harnett?
We are launching a new collection in a few weeks. This collection was made in America, with American sourcing. We are excited about it. Walt Disney Signature has also experessed interest in working with us further.
The Pirate items are available on the Hayden-Harnett website now for pre-order, with an expected delivery date of May 1. Each item is a limited edition and only 50 pieces of each style will be sold. Locally, pieces from the collection are available at one of my very favorite boutiques, Nic del Mar in Coral Gables. And the movie opens on May 20th.
What do ya think?
