Every once in a while, I come across a project that makes my heart go pitter patter. A few months back, my bestie Tracey of One Brown Girl, told me about her new venture, The Passport Party Project. She was so excited about it and her passion came right through the phone. Now, anyone who knows Tracey knows that travel is in her blood. I follow her adventures across the globe via Twitter and Facebook. She’s a suitcase carrying chick, for sure!
Well, it bothers Tracey that many young women, especially those of color, have never known the joys of travel. And she also realizes that this means that they may never know any other language or culture than their own. So, rather than wait for someone else to fix this problem, Tracey started her own solution–The Passport Party Project. She travels around the country, holding Passport Parties. Each one is a travel-themed, daytime event that serves girls, aged 11-16. Each girl leaves with a check for her passport fees.
I. LOVE. IT. In fact, I’ve already let Tracey know that I will host a South Florida Passport Party this fall/winter. If you want to be a part of it, let me know. If you want to host a party in your area, email Tracey at firstname.lastname@example.org. And if you want to sponsor a passport for a girl, its costs right around $100. Consider it an investment in our most valuable natural resource.
