For nearly a week, I’ve been MIA. That’s because I was in New York City. I had an absolute BLAST, once I got over the CHILLY CHILLY. I was actually there to celebrate Black Girls Rock–a nonprofit movement started by Beverly Bond. Beverly, a DJ, was outraged by the way Black females are portrayed in mass media and decided to take a stand. GOOD STUFF!
I attended the BGR concert that featured Estelle, Melanie Fiona, Rah Digga, and more. I also sat in on the taping of the BGR Awards show, with performances by Jill Scott, Mary J Blige, Mary Mary, and others. And, there was a FAB dinner the night before the taping where I got to dine in the company of folks like BET’s Debra Lee, Andre Harrell, magazine publisher Jocelyn Taylor, actress Tatyana Ali, my “cousin” Flo Anthony and others.
I was on the trip as a media guest of General Motors, so in addition to all the BGR stuffs, I was also able to drive the new Chevrolet Sonic around Times Square. But, HANDS DOWN, the highlight of my trip was meeting the highest ranking Black female at GM, Alicia Boler-Davis. Her story inspired me and she shared so many kernels of wisdom that I SO NEEDED to hear.
I’ll be sharing it all in the next few days–stay tuned!!
Disclosure: I was a guest of General Motors for this trip. They provided my travel, lodging, meals and activities. All opinions are my own.
