My very first 2011 Art Basel event was a FAB one–The 8th Annual Master’s Mystery Art Show’s takeover of the Ritz Carlton South Beach. This private cocktail reception benefits the Masters in Fine Arts program at Florida International University.
The soiree, which is sponsored by Don Q Rum, truly keeps in the mystery theme in mind, as guests are invited to view and purchase the more than 1500 original 6×9 works, created by more than 300 artists from 31 countries. The artist’s name is only revealed after purchase.
This year, some of the world’s top fashion designers were also invited to participate by creating “wearable art” on white tshirts. This was DEFINITELY my favorite part of the show. Local designers like Julian Chang, Eduardo de las Casas, and Viviana Gabrieras had shirts on display alongside world renowned designers like Romero Britto. The tshirt bid$50. Again, you had no idea whose creation you had chosen until the purchase was completed.
