My FAB friends at Ella Bella Rozio in Coral Gables just hosted their annual showcase that features students from their Institute of Fashion. I’ve been a fan of this program for years. They take kids (ages 6-25) who aspire to be fashion designers and teach them the ropes. The focus on teaching the students to sketch, sew, and construct their own fashion collections. They then get to model their own creations at a fashion show, like the one held last weekend in the glamorous Chopin Suite at the Intercontinental Hotel.
This time around, the collections was inspired by the decades of the 2oth century. As always, I was blown away with what the youngsters came up with–the put modern twists on flappers, hippies, punk rockers, elegant classics, back bustles and more. There was a cocktail hour followed by the Student Fashion show. After the show the students received awards and accolades for their success in the year-long program. Victoria Harding, who has been in the program for 7 years won Designer of the Year award and will be attending Syracuse University in the fall, studying fashion design. Twelve year old Kasey Riera, whom I met several years ago was named Pattern Maker of the Year for her 50s collection. Alexa Pex (15 years old), was awarded Best Collection of the Year (1980’s).
After the Awards Ceremony, Ella Bella presented their the new collection– Summer Resort Evening Wear, inspired by the 1900s and 1970s. LOVE IT!
