Lunch at Cantina Laredo

IMG_3210

Last weekend, as part of STAYcation Weekend, the Hubs and I had lunch at Cantina Laredo in The Village at Gulfstream Park. I was more than a little concerned about doing Mexican, as I absolutely HATE cilantro.  But, I also knew that Cantina Laredo wasn’t your average Mexican joint–it’s way upscale–in fact, I would say that it’s quite cosmopolitan and cultured.  Everything about the place says opulence, including the long curved bar chocked with top shelf liquors and a private dining room that boasts of presentation abilities.

But, as you well know, I won’t be fooled by furnishings in a restaurant.  The proof is in the pudding–or, in this case, the pork.  The Front of the House Manager came out to greet us and I made absolutely no qualms about my dislike for cilantro.  He made a few suggestions and we actually went with them.  So, we started off with the Chicken Quesadillas.  The presentation was great, but they tasted absolutely FAB, filled with fajita chicken.  YUM.

At the manager’s suggestion, my husband ordered the Asada y Huevos (Steak and Eggs).  It was grilled steak with chimichurri sauce and served with 2 eggs.  He thought it was great.  I took a big bite and agreed.  I had the Carnitas–braised pork shanks topped with chipotle wine sauce.  They were so tender and the sauce had a small kick to it.  LOVED it!  Another suggestion was the Enchilada Veracruz–Stuffed with chicken, spinach and monterey jack cheese topped with tomatillo sauce, vinaigrette marinated vegetables, and queso fresco.  So, we added that to the mix too!  Please know that we had a TABLE FULL of food!

And JUST when I thought that I couldn’t eat another bite, THIS showed up!

We went with the Mexican Apple Pie, thinking it’s JUST apple pie, right?  Wrong.  The waiter brings out a hot skillet, puts butter and brandy in it–of course, it smelled like heaven.  Then he scoops a healthy dollop of Cinnamon Ice Cream atop the pie, and poured that butter/brandy concoction all around it.  Good grief!  It was SINFUL.  SINFUL.  I HIGHLY recommend it.

In fact, I highly recommend Cantina Laredo–sophisticated Mexican cuisine.

Disclosure:  We were provided this SINFUL meal to facilitate the review.  All opinions are my own.
