Brand New Bestie Spotlight on Rico Love

rico love

Let’s talk about songwriters.  Although I’ve never been one, I would assume that if your songs are hits, then you are successful.  Well, using that criteria, my new bestie, Rico Love, is successful beyond measure.  You see, in the Hip Hop and R&B genres, he’s smoking hot!  And, although you might not know his name, you will DEFINITELY recognize the songs he’s written and/or produced–how about that catchy tune from Diddy Dirty Money, Hello, Good Morning?  What about the jam that put Kelly Rowland back in the spotlight, Motivation?  And Usher‘s There Goes My Baby?  All of those came from my brand new bestie.  He’s written hits for powerhouses like Beyonce (Sweet Dreams), Keri Hilson, Nelly, Fergie, Amerie, Fat Joe, and Fantasia, just to name a few.

Just before I left for Jamaica, I talked at length with Rico.  I have to say that I was MOST impressed with Rico.  He’s well spoken, well mannered, and just a charming guy. And did I mention that he’s local? Yep, he’s been living right here in South Florida for the last 4 years, right under our noses.  And, NO, I will NOT share his address.

Rico Love grew up in Harlem and credits one of his neighbors for his hip hop moniker–he was Richard Butler until that point.  He was fortunate enough to be signed by Usher’s label as a rapper, who recognized his melodic rhyming as a required skill for songwriting and urged Rico to give it a try.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Here’s a bit of the back and forth.  Check it out–

One of the things that folks of my generation say about the music of your generation is that your songs have no substance.  How do you feel about being one of the few that challenge this theory?

I think that it’s my duty.  But also, substance has no age.  We can go back to any generation and find music of both substance and not.  It is my obligation to write and produce good music.

Who have you not worked with that you’d like to?

I’d love to work with Rufus Wainwright, Michael Stipe of R.E.M., and of course, Kanye and Jay-Z.

What’s coming up that your fans can look forward to in the near future?

I have projects in the works with Mary J Blige, Brandy, Usher, Romeo Santos of Aventura, and Melanie Fiona.  My plan is to have ten different “Top Ten” hits in the next year.

So, there you have it.  What do you think of Rico Love?  And, here’s the video for Kelly Rowland’s Motivation.  Be warned, it’s steamy and may not be suitable for viewing at work!  When you hear it, remember–Jewel’s bestie wrote that!
