Everyone knows the story of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. The film debuted in 1959. Here’s the plot: A baby girl is cursed by an evil witch and sleeps until awakened by a the kiss of a prince. The girl is the star of the story–becoming one of Disney’s acclaimed Princesses. Case closed. Well, until the folks at Disney had the brilliant idea of retelling the story, while concurrently telling the back story of the witch, Maleficent. What a tale, what a tale!
But the story will never work without the right cast, right? While Angelina Jolie is perfect as Maleficent, the role of Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) is crucial to the story and must be believable. After the audition process, Elle Fanning was cast in the role. Elle is the kid sister of Dakota Fanning. Yes, THAT Dakota Fanning. Elle is SUPREME as Aurora. I saw the film the night before I met Elle. And, when Elle walked in the room, everyone knew why she was cast in this particular role. Because she IS Aurora. Let me explain.
Aurora grew up in a very sheltered environment. Because of this, she’s sweet and bubbly, but also very naive. Elle is sweet and bubbly, but not naive at all. During her interview, I actually tweeted that if I ever had another girl, I would want her to have Elle’s personality. She’s truly a beautiful soul. Here are some of the highlights:
*On being cast as a Disney Princess, but without any singing:
…I was like, I’m surely gonna get to sing the song, you know?…Lana Del Rey, she sings that song in our trailer, and it’s so perfect…it’s nice to have her haunting voice…
*On the role of Sleeping Beauty:
It was my dream…when anyone asks what I wanted to be when I grew up when I was little, I would say, “A Disney princess,” ’cause that’s the ultimate goal in life, I think, for any young, young girl. And especially Sleeping Beauty. She was always my favorite one ’cause I felt like I looked — you know, when you’re little you see which ones you look like the most and she was the one that I looked like the most. So I would go to Disney store and I would buy her clothes and her shoes,so to get to play this is, it’s really the dream.
I really can’t tell you guys how great she is in this role. I think this one will be a breakout role for her–with roles coming out of the woodwork now! I wish her all the best! Here she is in the scene that she says is her favorite from the movie!
Disclosure: I was able to meet Elle as part of the Disney press junket for Maleficent in Los Angeles. Disney covered my travel, lodging, meals and activities. All of the opinions, however, are my own.
