Very few events can compete with the magnitude of Art Basel. In fact, many event planners have changed the date of their event because of the Art Basel conflict. But, what if you birthday falls during the the 4 day festival? Should you postpone the party? Should you move the celebration to another city? Should you just pretend that it’s no big deal?
Well, my bestie Rico Love was born 29 years ago, yesterday. And, for months, the highly sought-after songwriter/producer’s team has been planning a bash. Smack in the middle of Art Basel. Smack in the middle of South Beach. Fearlessly. There would be a cocktail party and dinner at Vic & Angelos South Beach, hosted by music heavyweights Diddy, Usher, and Mary J Blige. Then, an afterparty at Club Play. These invitations were among the most coveted during Art Basel. In fact, the Miami Herald named it one of the Celebby Art Basel Parties You Can’t Get Into. The Miami New Times lamented that they weren’t invited. But guess what? YA GIRL WAS THERE!
What an event! While Miami’s own DJ Affect spun, Rico worked the room. I’m sure he spoke to everyone in the room. And his celeb friends showed up big time–from Timbaland to Cee-lo Green to Gabrielle Union to Andre Harrell to Rocsi Diaz to Fabolous to Melanie Fiona to Deborah Cox to Busta Rhymes, and more. Local folks were in attendance as well–like my bestie Charles Albert and his team, IT couple Tara Solomon and Nick D’Annunzio, and Miami Heat Stars Juwan Howard and Chris Bosh.
Many songs written by Rico Love have gone on to win Grammy Awards. One such song is There Goes My Baby by Usher. It won in the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance category and was both co-written and co-produced by Rico. Usher presented the actual Grammy to Rico for his birthday. What a touching moment!
Once the party moved to Club Play, there were more surprises–including a 5 tier birthday cake and a soulful rendition of Happy Birthday by Melanie Fiona.
Here’s what Rico had to say about the party:
I had such an amazing time! I had Diddy, Usher and Mary hosting…my closest friends celebrating with me…this was so epic. 2011 was such an incredible year for me and I look forward to another year of #1 hits.
