Last week, I met Roberto Coin–one of the most interesting folks that I’ve ever met. I went to an exclusive event at Mayors Jewelers in the Village of Merrick Park. In celebration of Mayors’ 100th anniversary, Mr Coin designed their new Art Deco Collection. LOVED IT! The collection includes colorful necklaces, bangle, and earrings made of yellow gold, sterling silver, and enamel with ornaments that reflect both lavishness and opulence. The Roberto Coin Art Deco collection is now available at all Mayors stores.
Roberto Coin had on a snazzy suit and was groomed impeccably when we spoke in a small sitting area off of Mayor’s showroom. When I asked about his Italian roots, he advised that he was from the city of Venice and that he was a “Venetian first, and an Italian second.” He said it jokingly, but it made me really want to visit his hometown.
He’s been designing jewelry for many years, with his creations being sold in fine jewelry establishments, like Mayors, Neiman Marcus, Saks, and Harrods. He produces more than 600 new models each year. His He has a long standing relationship with Mayors, calling them “one of my oldest partners.” The relationship goes back over 25 years.
One of the things that I found most interesting about Roberto Coin’s work is that each piece has a small ruby hidden within it, placed so that the stone is in direct contact with the skin. According to ancient Egyptian legend, wearing a ruby near your skin promotes a long, healthy, happy life. Since 1996, it has become the exclusive mark of jewelry by Roberto Coin. He calls it a “secret gift of good wishes” to every woman who wears it.
I found Mr Coin to be quite a charming gentleman. I also met his wife, Pilar, who had on the cutest pink Emilio Pucci dress.
Disclosure: Mayors Jewelers and Roberto Coin gifted me a beach towel, a jeweled writing pen, a 2011 monthly planner, a jewelry roll, and silver-toned bejeweled flash drive. These items did not influence my post in any way.
