After hosting in the Chevy Cupcake Crawl back in August, Jewel swore she would never eat another cupcake no matter how delightful they looked! Saturday’s Cupcake Challenge made her eat those words-literally! Jewel was invited to judge the cupcake creations presented at Miami’s Top Cupcake Challenge. The other judges were Letty Alvarez (baker and owner of LA Sweets), Marybel Rodriguez (CBS 4 anchor/reporter), Kathy Martin (Miami Herald Food Editor), and Diana Diaz (co-anchor of WSVN Today in Florida). Contestants submitted recipes for weeks before the final fourteen were chosen to compete in Miami’s Top Cupcake Challenge, held at The Shops at Sunset Place.
Although all the contestants created delectable treats, there could only be one winner. The Miami Mojo cupcake created by Luz Perez took home the title of Miami’s Top Cupcake. As you may have guessed, the Miami Mojo was inspired by the ever popular South Beach classic-the mojito. While working at Houston’s, Luz Perez decided that a mojito-inspired cupcake may be as popular as the drink. She was right! Her original recipe is vanilla cake and rum, with a rum glaze on top. The icing is a mixture of buttercream frosting, chopped fresh mint, mint gel (just a dab!), and fresh lime juice. It is even topped off with a sliced lime, just like the drink! Miami’s Top Cupcake Challenge was an exciting event. All of the contestants were full of personality and had unique and tasty treats to offer. This event was definitely a crowd pleaser! Guests were able to purchase tickets for another sweet event-How Sweet It Is, a tasting event occurring Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from this event (also held at The Shops at Sunset Place) benefit local charities.
