Q & A with Julian Chang

Home grown fashion designer, Julian Chang, will unveil his newest collection during next week’s Miami International Fashion Week.  It was just last year that Julian stole opened the same show with his Ready-to-Wear collection.  This year, he will debut his 2011 Contemporary Ready-to-Wear collection.   Of course, I had to snag an interview with him and boy, was he hard to catch up with!  I tracked him down earlier this week, not stressing about the show here in Miami, but working hard in Vegas!  This man is a machine!

Although born in Peru, Julian has been in the United States since he was 17.  He originally came to study at the Miami International University of Art & Design.  That led to his very first collection–of eveningwear–that became a favorite of Miami’s elite.  Since then, his career has skyrocketed.  In fact, Womens Wear Daily named him “Up & Coming Ready-to-Wear Designer to Watch.”

The new collection features stretch jersey fabrics in solid and prints. Blue, red, yellow, green, white and orange are all the underlying colors in pieces like dresses, tops and skirts. His designs can be found in several boutiques nationwide, as well as in his midtown showroom.

Tell me about where you found the inspiration for the new collection?

My collection is not only flirty, but also sophisticated, comfortable and of course, affordable.” Retail price points range from $95 for a top to $200 for a dress. Fashion is not a sacrifice; it should be synonymous with comfort, versatility and affordability. Why not look and feel fabulous, without the price tag?

I wanted to create a collection where women could go from lunch to cocktails, all with a simple accessory switch. Today women are busier than ever and they should be able to walk out in the in the morning and look fabulous all day into evening

Who are some of your favorite clients?

I have dressed many celebrities including Paz Vega and Gloria Estefan….I love to design wearable clothing for the modern woman.  Whenever I create a collection, my customers are the first thing on my mind.  When I see someone wearing my designs on the street, I get a secret rush….it is just so exciting!

What do you like most about running your business from South Florida?

The weather! I get to travel very often for my business but every time I come back home, I feel so blessed to be living in South Florida.

Do you think Miami will ever have a huge fashion scene a la New York, Paris, Milan?

There is not doubt that we have as much talent as the other major Fashion capitals of the world, so it is up to us to push for the “Miami Fashion Movement.”

What one item must every woman who wants to be fashionable in South Florida have in her closet?

Our new tank dress, (always a life saver and a must have dress), it is shorter on the front with a longer back… A woman can go from day to night, casual or elegant….

What’s next for Julian Chang?  In what directions are you headed?

After launching my Ready-To-Wear collection for specialty stores, I discovered and embraced this new challenge and actually received amazing feedback and rectification to move forward with this part of my business…I love it so much, that I would like to continue expand in this area. I am currently sold in over 1200 retail stores around the world.
