Save a life this Christmas

This Holiday Season, more than any other, has driven home the true meaning of GIVING.  There is so much NEED in the world and so much less to go around, it seems.  As part of the Global Team of 200, I bring information about at least two causes every month.  This month, I’d like to spotlight Maternity Worldwide.  They work in developing countries to help women and girls access the high quality maternal health care they need to be able to give birth safely.

Did you know:

  • Every 2 minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies in pregnancy or childbirth, 800 per day
  • 7-10 million women and girls suffer severe or long lasting illnesses caused by complications in pregnancy and childbirth
  • 56% of the total deaths occur in sub Saharan Africa
  • The maternal mortality ratio (that is the number of women dying per 100,000 live births) is 240 in developing countries compared with 16 in developed countries.
  • Every year more than a million children lose their mother as a result of her death in pregnancy or childbirth. These children are up to 10 times more likely to die prematurely than those living in families with a mother

Sobering stats, huh?  But, there is something that we can do.  Main measures which have been proven to help reduce maternal deaths area:

  • Ensuring women have access to high quality ante natal care, ideally attending at least four times during pregnancy. This helps to pick up risks early on and can be used to ensure women receive the right level of care when giving birth.
  • Having support from a skilled birth attendant (that is a suitably trained doctor, midwife or nurse) when giving birth
  • When necessary, being able to have the baby in a well-equipped hospital or health center
  • Having an understanding of and voluntary access to modern family planning

Maternity Worldwide has a program that allows one to Sponsor a Safe Birth and SAVE A LIFE this Christmas.  What better way to celebrate the holiday?  The costs are minimal.  Less than 25 dollars.  You can even get a Safe Birth Certificate and honor a loved one–they will get the certificate showing that you made the donation in their honor.  Here’s how to do it.   Please note:  Maternity Worldwide is headquartered in the UK.  The donations are listed in pounds.  Your donations will automatically be changed to dollars once you reach checkout.

I urge you to think about this.  It’s what the holidays are about!
