The Art of Transformation with En Vogue

Recently, the Opa Locka Community Development Corporation hosted a FAB evening to celebrate revitalization in the city of Opa-Locka.  The event was called The Art of Transformation and featured a performance by one of my favorite singing groups of all time–En Vogue.  Hosted by Local 10 WPLG anchor, Calvin Hughes–there was fun all night.  The venue was amazing, as the soiree took place right on the runway at Opa Locka Airport–there were planes parked to flank the stage.

Willie Logan, President of the OLCDC, talked about the plan for the city, including the Our Town project.  This project focuses bringing cool art to public spaces of the Magnolia North neighborhood.  While he unveiled the amazing plan, we noshed and nom’d on shrimp and grits and jerk chicken from a variety of local caterers, including my bestie Hugh Sinclair of Irie Spice Catering.

There was a short video of the Community Gateways program.  You can see it here.

After some pomp and circumstance, also known as acknowledgement of dignitaries and sponsors, the FUN began.  First off, funnyman Robert Townsend showed up as a surprise guest.  He initiated a male against female dance contest, amongst other hilarious stunts.  Finally, En Vogue graced the stage.  WHOA!!  They look a LITTLE bit older, but I swear those chicks can SANG!!!  They sang all of their old hits, as well as covers of others from their era–like the Mary Jane Girls.  They were FAB!

Disclosure:  I was an invited media guest for this event.  All opinions are my own.
