Have you seen the huge Speigeltent on 38th and Biscayne? That’s the Pleasure Garden and the Orchid Show is being performed there. What is the Orchid Show? Well, I’ve heard about it since it opened in early November. It’s been called “cirque meets burlesque.” And the Pleasure Garden part? It’s two vintage pop-up structures built in wood, steel and canvas and decorated with mirrors, red velvets, and chandeliers. One of them is the performance tent that seats 500 people, and the other is the restaurant tent that can accommodate sit-down meals. And that restaurant tent is actually a FAB Michelle Bernstein pop up restaurant. There’s a courtyard of menagerie in between them.
When my bestie, Vanessa James of Vanessa James Media, invited me to see the show, I jumped at the chance. When she told me that others, including my SERIOUS girl crush Teedra Moses, would be joining the fun, I was completely over the moon. We all gathered at Southstreet for drinks and light bites before walking over to the tents.
The show was interesting! It tells the story of Orchid, the creation of a reclusive and melancholic Master Gardener, as she searches for happiness through worlds that are intoxicated by her beauty, mystery and sensuality. Along the way she discovers strange and wonderful creatures such as Poison Ivy, Honeysuckle Rose, Venus Mantrap, Tiger Lily and the Bee Keeper. There is plenty of singing and dancing, all with sexual overtones and various stages of nudity. I liked the way that they weaved in some pop hits–like Madonna‘s Like a Virgin and Janet Jackson‘s Control.
I had a FAB time and would DEFINITELY see it again. It runs through February 3rd, with performances Wed-Sun. There are late night performances on Friday/Saturday. Ticket prices start at $59, not including dinner and parking. Get ticket information on the site and let me know if you’re going back. I may join you!
Disclosure: I received complimentary admission to this performance as a Media Guest. All opinions are my own.
