TJ Maxx Teaches Me About Off-Price Shopping

IMG00351-20100923-0912

Last week, TJ Maxx invite a few bloggers into their South Beach store for a presentation about the 2010 Fall Trends and also the ins and outs of Off-Price Shopping. When I got the invitation, it seemed like a really cool event, however, when Thursday morning rolled around I was not a happy camper. First of all, it was raining cats and dogs. Second of all, I had to be there at 8am. Third of all, “there” was South Beach! YUCK YUCK and YUCK!

I had never been to this particular store. It’s in a fancy mall right on 5th and Alton Road. I pass by it all the time, but never stopped in. As I entered the parking lot, I wondered how much it would set me back. Imagine my surprise when I noticed the “2 hours free” sign! Wow…FREE parking on South Beach???? Who knew?

When I entered the store, the first thing that I noticed was how clean and organized it was. I’ve been in a few TJ Maxx stores and none looked like this. They had a nice breakfast spread laid out and I settled in for the program. I knew only one other blogger there and she had been flown in from Central Florida. I met the others. Everyone seemed very cool.

We met our hostesses, Thea Houghton of TJ Maxx/Marshalls and Alison Deyette, television correspondent. Alison has been on everything from The View to The Tyra Show.   She knows fashion through and through. First they gave us an overview of TJ Maxx. Then Alison took us through some fall trends that we should be on the lookout for. Of course a lot of it didn’t apply to South Florida’s weather, especially the parts about sweaters and outerwear, but some of it was really good stuff. She talked about statement jewelry, slim leg pants, and fur handbags.

Then she educated us on TJ Maxx and Marshalls. I had always thought of TJ Maxx offerings as past season and slightly damaged seconds. Nothing could be further from the truth. TJ Maxx offers same season merchandise at unbelievable savings, with their buying power giving them leverage. Most of the merchandise is first quality and each store gets more than 10,000 new items per week. WOW! Finally, we took a tour of the store, including the back and even learned about The Runway, a high fashion department that is only included in a few stores. It was quite an education.

TJ Maxx even offered me a chance to give away a $100 giftcard to one of my readers. Find out more about this tomorrow in a special post.

Disclaimer: TJ Maxx gave me a nice swag bag that included a gorgeous cashmere scarf and a $100 gift card. These items in no way influenced my post about their store.
